Saruq Pattern
Size: 5¼" x 3½"
Pattern chart with information about the origins of the carpet and fully illustrated instructions for the experienced needleworker to produce a 1/12th scale miniature version in needlepoint of an authentic oriental carpet.
The original carpet on which this miniature version is based comes from the town of Saruq in western Iran, which grew in importance as a source of carpets during the nineteenth century. This late nineteenth century example is unusual both for its golden colouring (reds and blues are more common) and the particularly fine drawing of the design, which consists of a central quartered palmette repeated in each corner. The outlines in olive green (a favourite colour from the best period of Saruq weaving) accentuate the design.
